Ask five people what a marquee tent is and you will get roughly four different answers. A wedding planner in Kent describes a big white structure standing on a lawn. A venue manager in Chicago pictures the lit sign above a theatre door. A tent builder talks about a small module bolted onto the side of a larger tent. All three are correct.

This guide covers all three meanings, then goes into the parts that actually determine whether a marquee works for your site: frame profile, fabric weight, wind and snow ratings, fire certification, sizing, and what these structures cost. Three meanings of the word “marquee"

British and Commonwealth English: the event tent

In the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, a marquee is simply a large tent used for an outdoor gathering. Weddings, garden parties, county shows, exhibitions, beer festivals. Major dictionaries agree on this sense: a large tent used for eating and drinking at events held mainly outside.

The word came into English in the late seventeenth century from the French marquise, which referred to a canopy placed over an officer’s tent. English speakers back-formed a singular “marquee" from a word that looked like a plural, and the spelling stuck.

American English: the theatre canopy

In the United States and Canada, marquee usually means the rooflike structure projecting over a theatre or hotel entrance, typically carrying the show title in lights. It also works as an adjective for anything headline-worthy: a marquee player, a marquee event.

This matters more than it sounds. A US buyer typing “marquee tent" into a search box may want a three-metre entrance canopy, not a twenty-metre event hall. Anyone selling large structures has to address both senses on the same page or lose the enquiry.

Trade usage: the add-on module

Inside the tent industry, marquee often describes a smaller structure attached to a main one. An entrance, a vestibule, a covered aisle, or a sheltered walkway over a flight of stairs. Because the components are modular, corner pieces and free-standing frames let you turn a corner, dog-leg around a tree, or run a covered corridor from a building to a tent.

Add-on widths in the trade commonly run 6 ft, 9 ft and 10 ft. Of the three meanings this one is documented least well online, which is odd given how much it improves an event layout. We come back to it below.

One caution before you order. The rental industry uses “marquee" loosely. In Canada and the UK it often means a peaked frame tent; in parts of the US it means a small awning. Ask for photographs and the exact pole layout before signing anything.

Marquee vs frame tent vs pole tent vs clear span

Most competing articles treat “marquee" as a fourth structural category sitting alongside the others. It usually is not. A frame marquee and a frame tent are, in most catalogues, the same object with different trim.

In practice, choose a marquee or clear span when you need clear sightlines, a hard surface, or documented weather performance at scale. Choose a pole tent when you want the tall swooping peak and you have a big lawn you are allowed to drive stakes into. For the majority of weddings, frame marquees win on flexibility alone.

The underlying distinction is simple enough to hold on to: a pole tent gets its strength from fabric tension and stakes, while a marquee gets its strength from an aluminium frame. Almost every other difference follows from that.

What a marquee is made of

Two quotes for the same span can differ by a factor of two, and the difference is nearly always hidden in the bill of materials rather than the headline size.

Frame

Hard-pressed extruded aluminium alloy 6061/T6, anodised against corrosion. This is a structural alloy, the same family used where failure is not an option, and it is the reason a well-built frame carries a service life of more than 20 years. Our profiles are cut on CNC equipment to roughly ±0.2 mm, which sounds like marketing until you have watched a crew try to force a badly cut beam into a connector on a wet afternoon.

Connectors should be hot-dip galvanised steel. This is where cheap units fail first. Too thin a zinc layer and you get rust within a few seasons, and rust bleeds onto the PVC cover and onto your client’s floor.

Fabric

Roof cover: 850 g/m² double PVC-coated polyester, opaque, waterproof, UV-resistant, tear-resistant and self-cleaning

Sidewalls: 650 g/m² PVC-coated polyester, translucent. Daylight floods the interior during the day and the tent glows under uplighting at night

Wall options: clear PVC panels, glass wall systems, ABS solid walls, sandwich panel walls for insulated or long-term use

Seams and tensioning

Panels are joined by high-frequency welding rather than stitching. A welded seam is waterproof; a stitch line is a row of holes, and it is usually the first place a cover starts leaking after a season outdoors. The fabric then slides into a keder track on the frame and is pulled tight with a bar tensioning system. That tension is what stops the roof drumming in wind, and drumming is what eventually tears it.

Why PVC-coated beats spray-treated fabric

In PVC-coated polyester, flame retardancy sits inside the coating chemistry. On cheaper polyethylene or spray-treated polyester it is a surface treatment that washes off and breaks down under UV, sometimes inside a single season. It is the most common hidden gap between a budget tent and a professional one, and you cannot see it in a photograph.

Marquees are modular. Span is fixed by the profile size and length extends in repeating bays, generally 3 m on smaller spans and 5 m on larger ones. A 10 * 30 m and a 10 * 45 m share a parts inventory, so you are buying or renting length rather than a different building.

Roof pitch typically runs 18 to 22 degrees. A steeper pitch sheds rain and snow faster but gives the wind more sail area to push against, which is why pitch, profile and anchoring get engineered together rather than picked independently off a list.

Wind, snow and anchoring

Wind ratings are quoted more often than they are explained. Below is what ours test to, and what we would ask any supplier to put in writing before you pay a deposit.

  • Wind: 100 km/h (about 62 mph) as standard, with large-span and heavy-duty configurations engineered to 110 to 120 km/h
  • Snow: 0.5 kN/m², roughly 75 kg per square metre
  • Temperature: −30 °C to +70 °C, with cold-climate fabric formulations tested lower
  • Governing standards: EN 13782 for temporary structures in Europe, EN 1991-1-3 and EN 1991-1-4 for Eurocode snow and wind actions, ASCE 7 for wind load design in the US

Anchoring is where ratings are won or lost

A wind rating is not a property of the tent alone. It assumes the structure is fully tensioned, anchored with the specified number of fixing points, installed level by people who have done it before. Three fixing methods cover nearly every site:

  • Ground stakes: long galvanised steel stakes for grass and soil
  • Ballast: concrete blocks or heavy weight plates for concrete, asphalt, decking and any surface you cannot penetrate
  • Earth anchors: for sand, gravel and soft ground

Two caveats worth repeating. A 100 km/h tent with half the stakes missing is not a 100 km/h tent. And many jurisdictions want stamped engineering calculations plus a building permit for larger or long-term installations, so ask for the engineering package while you still have time to change the date.

What Is a Marquee Tent?

Fire safety and the certificates to ask for

Fire marshals are not interested in how the tent looks. They check that the paperwork matches the physical canopy, and where the two do not agree, the structure comes down. Anyone who has worked events long enough has seen a teardown ordered the morning of a wedding.

CPAI-84 is the tent-specific baseline across North America. In states such as California, New York and Michigan it is effectively mandatory for commercial tentage, and fire marshals routinely ask to see current certificates before they will issue an event permit.

Three documents to request before you place an order:

  • The fabric fire certificate from an accredited laboratory (SGS, TÜV, Intertek), not a supplier’s letterhead
  • Batch traceability for the fabric actually going onto your structure
  • A sample swatch, so your fire marshal can run their own burn test

Certification is not permanent either. Flame-retardant performance degrades with UV exposure and cleaning, and authorities increasingly want current-year documents. Keep a compliance folder on site with the certificates, the permits, and a site map showing egress routes.

What a marquee costs in 2026

Rental

Price tracks structure type first, then size:

  • Pole tents: about $0.60 to $1.50 per sq ft
  • Frame tents: about $1.00 to $2.00 per sq ft
  • Sailcloth: about $1.50 to $3.00 per sq ft
  • Clear-top: about $2.00 to $3.50 per sq ft
  • Marquee and structure tents: $3.00 to $7.00 and up per sq ft

A standard 20 * 40 ft marquee with basic sidewalls typically runs $1,500 to $4,000 for a single day. Larger or premium-fabric builds land in the $5,000 to $8,000 range for multi-day events.

Base rental is not the real number. Industry estimates put the all-in cost at 2.5 to 3 times the base price once you add what the site actually requires: sidewalls at $1 to $3 per linear foot, flooring at $1 to $4 per sq ft, lighting and power from $150 to $2,000, climate control from $100 up to $5,000, installation and removal often 20 to 40% of the tent cost, permits up to $1,000, and delivery between $200 and $1,500.

Purchase

For venues and rental companies the calculation turns on service life rather than day rate. Publicly listed reference prices for Chinese-manufactured aluminium frame tents run around US$30 to $35 per square metre FOB for standard configurations, rising to US$75 to $170 per square metre for premium builds with insulated sandwich panel walls, glass systems and high-spec finishes. Span, eave height, wall system and certification package all move the figure.

Set against a frame life of more than 20 years and a fabric life near 8, a purchased marquee worked across a rental season often pays for itself inside the first year or two of bookings.

How much space does each guest need

Capacity depends entirely on how people use the floor. Round-table banquet seating is the hungriest common layout.

  • Standing or cocktail reception: about 1.0 m² per person
  • Ceremony or row seating: about 1.0 m² per person
  • Seated banquet on round tables: 1.5 to 2.0 m² per person

On that basis a 16 * 30 m marquee, 480 m², holds up to 480 guests in ceremony or cocktail configuration. The same structure seats roughly 240 to 320 for a sit-down dinner.

Then subtract everything that is not a guest. Dance floor, stage or DJ platform, bar, buffet line, cake and gift tables, photo booth, lounge furniture, service aisles. If your calculation lands on 2,000 sq ft and you are using a pole tent, go up a size, because the poles will take 10 to 15% of the floor.

Where marquees get used

  • Weddings and receptions. The clear-span interior is the whole point. You choose where the dance floor and head table go with no pole cutting through the first dance, and add-on modules give you the ceremony aisle or the entrance to the main room.
  • Corporate events and product launches. Structured, brandable, and the aluminium frame carries lighting, AV and rigging loads that a fabric-only tension tent cannot.
  • Exhibitions and trade shows. Modular bays mean you scale hall length to the exhibitor count.
  • Festivals, concerts and sport. Clear span is the only sensible answer where crowd size and weather both matter.
  • Warehousing and industry. Pillar-free interiors let forklifts work inside, and sandwich panel or steel sheet walls upgrade security.
  • Hospitality and semi-permanent space. Restaurants, hotels and glamping operators use marquees as four-season extensions.

Entrance and walkway marquees

Add-on modules get far less attention than the main structure, which is a shame, because they solve the problems a single big box cannot.

  • Weather-protected arrival. Guests step out of a car under cover rather than into rain, and on a wedding day that covered transition is where a lot of the photography happens.
  • Stair and level-change coverage. You can roof a flight of stairs or a ramp, which keeps the accessible route dry and keeps you on the right side of accessibility requirements.
  • Covered links between structures. Connect a ceremony tent to a reception tent, or a building to a tent, with a covered alleyway.
  • Registration, cloakroom and bar zones. Small sectioned-off areas keep queues and clutter out of the main room.

Details that decide whether it works

  • Match the add-on eave height to the host structure, or plan a deliberate step and flash it properly
  • Use corner components to turn the walkway around site obstacles
  • Add guttering between joined roofs. Water running off one roof should not land in the walkway
  • Specify flooring through the walkway. Bare ground plus foot traffic plus rain equals mud carried into the main tent
  • Light it. A walkway with uplighting and draping reads as deliberate design rather than an afterthought
  • Confirm the anchoring plan for the add-on. Narrow modules carry less self-weight and can need ballast even when the main tent is staked

Customization and accessories

A marquee is a frame plus a cover. Everything else is how you turn it into a venue.

  • Wall systems: soft PVC sidewalls, clear PVC windows, glass wall panels, ABS solid walls, sandwich panel walls, steel sheet walls
  • Doors: double-wing glass doors, single glass doors, PVC zip doors, industrial roller doors
  • Flooring: cassette floor systems, economic wooden flooring, carpet over sub-floor
  • Interior: roof liners, sidewall liners, drapes and curtains, chandeliers and lighting packages
  • Climate: air conditioning, heaters, insulation liners
  • Furniture and staging: banquet chairs and tables, stages, bars
  • Anchoring: earth anchors, heavy weight plates, stake sets for every surface
  • Branding: custom frame and fabric colours, logo printing on PVC covers

Installation, care and service life

A mid-size marquee goes up with a small crew in a few hours. Large clear spans need more people. Because the system is modular, once a crew has built one bay they have built all of them, which is why we supply an installation manual and video with every order and can send an engineer to supervise a first build.

Maintenance that genuinely extends service life:

  • Clean with pH-neutral soap and water. Never pressure-wash PVC coatings or use solvents
  • Never store a cover wet. Mildew is the single biggest killer of stored fabric
  • Inspect welds, keder tracks and connectors annually; re-torque, re-galvanise or replace as needed
  • Keep spares on hand: connector pins, keder, a patch kit and at least one spare panel
  • Re-certify fabric fire performance on the schedule your jurisdiction requires

Handled this way the frame passes 20 years and the cover approaches 8, and the whole thing can be dismantled, moved and rebuilt repeatedly. That is what makes a marquee a fixed asset rather than a consumable.

How to choose a marquee manufacturer

  • Confirm they actually manufacture. A factory controls alloy grade, profile tolerance, weld quality and fabric sourcing. A trading company can only pass on what it is given.
  • Compare profiles, not just spans. Two quotes for a “20 m marquee" can differ enormously. Ask for the profile cross-section in millimetres.
  • Verify the alloy and finish. Hard-pressed extruded 6061/T6, anodised. Ask what the cheaper alternative in the quote actually is.
  • Demand named certifications. Not “flame retardant", but the standard, the laboratory and the batch reference.
  • Ask about quality control. Documented incoming, in-process and final inspection with a stated sampling plan.
  • Check installation support. Manual, video, remote guidance, or an engineer on site.
  • Get an itemised quote. Frame, cover, walls, doors, flooring, anchoring, packing, freight terms and payment terms listed separately. Vague quotes are how surprise costs happen.

Common mistakes

  • Buying on price per square metre alone. The same number can hide very different profile sizes, fabric weights and certification.
  • Assuming “flame retardant" means “certified". It does not. Ask for the standard and the laboratory.
  • Ignoring drainage. Water has to go somewhere, and somewhere is often your dance floor.
  • Under-ballasting. The wind rating assumes the specified anchor count.
  • Forgetting the space buffer. Poles, staging and bars all eat floor area.
  • Adding sidewalls late. Enclosing a tent changes the wind loading, usually needs more anchoring, and can trigger a fire-marshal re-check.
  • Ordering to the wrong lead time. Production plus sea freight is not a two-week proposition.

Do I need a permit for a marquee tent?

Usually for larger or longer-term structures, but thresholds vary widely by city and country. Some jurisdictions start reviewing at a few hundred square feet, and cooking, heating or a generator inside the tent can trigger automatic fire department review regardless of size.

What size marquee do I need for 100 guests?

For a standing or cocktail reception allow about 1.0 m² per person, so roughly 100 m². For seated banquet dining on round tables allow 1.5 to 2.0 m² per person, so 150 to 200 m², plus extra area for the dance floor, bar, stage and service zones.

Can two marquees be joined together?

Yes. Modular bay systems and gutter components are designed for it, which is how covered walkways, multi-room layouts and L- or T-shaped floor plans get built. Add guttering between joined roofs so water running off one does not land in the walkway.

Can a marquee be heated or air conditioned?

In the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, a marquee is simply a large tent used for an outdoor gathering. Weddings, garden parties, county shows, exhibitions, beer festivals. Major dictionaries agree on this sense: a large tent used for eating and drinking at events held mainly outside.

The word came into English in the late seventeenth century from the French marquise, which referred to a canopy placed over an officer’s tent. English speakers back-formed a singular “marquee" from a word that looked like a plural, and the spelling stuck.

American English: the theatre canopy

In the United States and Canada, marquee usually means the rooflike structure projecting over a theatre or hotel entrance, typically carrying the show title in lights. It also works as an adjective for anything headline-worthy: a marquee player, a marquee event.

This matters more than it sounds. A US buyer typing “marquee tent" into a search box may want a three-metre entrance canopy, not a twenty-metre event hall. Anyone selling large structures has to address both senses on the same page or lose the enquiry.

Trade usage: the add-on module

Inside the tent industry, marquee often describes a smaller structure attached to a main one. An entrance, a vestibule, a covered aisle, or a sheltered walkway over a flight of stairs. Because the components are modular, corner pieces and free-standing frames let you turn a corner, dog-leg around a tree, or run a covered corridor from a building to a tent.

Add-on widths in the trade commonly run 6 ft, 9 ft and 10 ft. Of the three meanings this one is documented least well online, which is odd given how much it improves an event layout. We come back to it below.

One caution before you order. The rental industry uses “marquee" loosely. In Canada and the UK it often means a peaked frame tent; in parts of the US it means a small awning. Ask for photographs and the exact pole layout before signing anything.

Marquee vs frame tent vs pole tent vs clear span

Most competing articles treat “marquee" as a fourth structural category sitting alongside the others. It usually is not. A frame marquee and a frame tent are, in most catalogues, the same object with different trim.

In practice, choose a marquee or clear span when you need clear sightlines, a hard surface, or documented weather performance at scale. Choose a pole tent when you want the tall swooping peak and you have a big lawn you are allowed to drive stakes into. For the majority of weddings, frame marquees win on flexibility alone.

The underlying distinction is simple enough to hold on to: a pole tent gets its strength from fabric tension and stakes, while a marquee gets its strength from an aluminium frame. Almost every other difference follows from that.

What a marquee is made of

Two quotes for the same span can differ by a factor of two, and the difference is nearly always hidden in the bill of materials rather than the headline size.

Frame

Hard-pressed extruded aluminium alloy 6061/T6, anodised against corrosion. This is a structural alloy, the same family used where failure is not an option, and it is the reason a well-built frame carries a service life of more than 20 years. Our profiles are cut on CNC equipment to roughly ±0.2 mm, which sounds like marketing until you have watched a crew try to force a badly cut beam into a connector on a wet afternoon.

Connectors should be hot-dip galvanised steel. This is where cheap units fail first. Too thin a zinc layer and you get rust within a few seasons, and rust bleeds onto the PVC cover and onto your client’s floor.

Fabric

Roof cover: 850 g/m² double PVC-coated polyester, opaque, waterproof, UV-resistant, tear-resistant and self-cleaning

Sidewalls: 650 g/m² PVC-coated polyester, translucent. Daylight floods the interior during the day and the tent glows under uplighting at night

Seams and tensioning

Panels are joined by high-frequency welding rather than stitching. A welded seam is waterproof; a stitch line is a row of holes, and it is usually the first place a cover starts leaking after a season outdoors. The fabric then slides into a keder track on the frame and is pulled tight with a bar tensioning system. That tension is what stops the roof drumming in wind, and drumming is what eventually tears it.

Why PVC-coated beats spray-treated fabric

In PVC-coated polyester, flame retardancy sits inside the coating chemistry. On cheaper polyethylene or spray-treated polyester it is a surface treatment that washes off and breaks down under UV, sometimes inside a single season. It is the most common hidden gap between a budget tent and a professional one, and you cannot see it in a photograph.

Marquees are modular. Span is fixed by the profile size and length extends in repeating bays, generally 3 m on smaller spans and 5 m on larger ones. A 10 * 30 m and a 10 * 45 m share a parts inventory, so you are buying or renting length rather than a different building.

Roof pitch typically runs 18 to 22 degrees. A steeper pitch sheds rain and snow faster but gives the wind more sail area to push against, which is why pitch, profile and anchoring get engineered together rather than picked independently off a list.

Wind, snow and anchoring

Wind ratings are quoted more often than they are explained. Below is what ours test to, and what we would ask any supplier to put in writing before you pay a deposit.

  • Wind: 100 km/h (about 62 mph) as standard, with large-span and heavy-duty configurations engineered to 110 to 120 km/h
  • Snow: 0.5 kN/m², roughly 75 kg per square metre
  • Temperature: −30 °C to +70 °C, with cold-climate fabric formulations tested lower
  • Governing standards: EN 13782 for temporary structures in Europe, EN 1991-1-3 and EN 1991-1-4 for Eurocode snow and wind actions, ASCE 7 for wind load design in the US

Anchoring is where ratings are won or lost

A wind rating is not a property of the tent alone. It assumes the structure is fully tensioned, anchored with the specified number of fixing points, installed level by people who have done it before. Three fixing methods cover nearly every site:

  • Ground stakes: long galvanised steel stakes for grass and soil
  • Ballast: concrete blocks or heavy weight plates for concrete, asphalt, decking and any surface you cannot penetrate
  • Earth anchors: for sand, gravel and soft ground

Two caveats worth repeating. A 100 km/h tent with half the stakes missing is not a 100 km/h tent. And many jurisdictions want stamped engineering calculations plus a building permit for larger or long-term installations, so ask for the engineering package while you still have time to change the date.

Fire safety and the certificates to ask for

Fire marshals are not interested in how the tent looks. They check that the paperwork matches the physical canopy, and where the two do not agree, the structure comes down. Anyone who has worked events long enough has seen a teardown ordered the morning of a wedding.

CPAI-84 is the tent-specific baseline across North America. In states such as California, New York and Michigan it is effectively mandatory for commercial tentage, and fire marshals routinely ask to see current certificates before they will issue an event permit.

Three documents to request before you place an order:

  • The fabric fire certificate from an accredited laboratory (SGS, TÜV, Intertek), not a supplier’s letterhead
  • Batch traceability for the fabric actually going onto your structure
  • A sample swatch, so your fire marshal can run their own burn test

Certification is not permanent either. Flame-retardant performance degrades with UV exposure and cleaning, and authorities increasingly want current-year documents. Keep a compliance folder on site with the certificates, the permits, and a site map showing egress routes.

What a marquee costs in 2026

Rental

Price tracks structure type first, then size:

  • Pole tents: about $0.60 to $1.50 per sq ft
  • Frame tents: about $1.00 to $2.00 per sq ft
  • Sailcloth: about $1.50 to $3.00 per sq ft
  • Clear-top: about $2.00 to $3.50 per sq ft
  • Marquee and structure tents: $3.00 to $7.00 and up per sq ft

A standard 20 * 40 ft marquee with basic sidewalls typically runs $1,500 to $4,000 for a single day. Larger or premium-fabric builds land in the $5,000 to $8,000 range for multi-day events.

Base rental is not the real number. Industry estimates put the all-in cost at 2.5 to 3 times the base price once you add what the site actually requires: sidewalls at $1 to $3 per linear foot, flooring at $1 to $4 per sq ft, lighting and power from $150 to $2,000, climate control from $100 up to $5,000, installation and removal often 20 to 40% of the tent cost, permits up to $1,000, and delivery between $200 and $1,500.

Purchase

For venues and rental companies the calculation turns on service life rather than day rate. Publicly listed reference prices for Chinese-manufactured aluminium frame tents run around US$30 to $35 per square metre FOB for standard configurations, rising to US$75 to $170 per square metre for premium builds with insulated sandwich panel walls, glass systems and high-spec finishes. Span, eave height, wall system and certification package all move the figure.

Set against a frame life of more than 20 years and a fabric life near 8, a purchased marquee worked across a rental season often pays for itself inside the first year or two of bookings.

How much space does each guest need

Capacity depends entirely on how people use the floor. Round-table banquet seating is the hungriest common layout.

  • Standing or cocktail reception: about 1.0 m² per person
  • Ceremony or row seating: about 1.0 m² per person
  • Seated banquet on round tables: 1.5 to 2.0 m² per person

On that basis a 16 * 30 m marquee, 480 m², holds up to 480 guests in ceremony or cocktail configuration. The same structure seats roughly 240 to 320 for a sit-down dinner.

Then subtract everything that is not a guest. Dance floor, stage or DJ platform, bar, buffet line, cake and gift tables, photo booth, lounge furniture, service aisles. If your calculation lands on 2,000 sq ft and you are using a pole tent, go up a size, because the poles will take 10 to 15% of the floor.

Where marquees get used

  • Weddings and receptions. The clear-span interior is the whole point. You choose where the dance floor and head table go with no pole cutting through the first dance, and add-on modules give you the ceremony aisle or the entrance to the main room.
  • Corporate events and product launches. Structured, brandable, and the aluminium frame carries lighting, AV and rigging loads that a fabric-only tension tent cannot.
  • Exhibitions and trade shows. Modular bays mean you scale hall length to the exhibitor count.
  • Festivals, concerts and sport. Clear span is the only sensible answer where crowd size and weather both matter.
  • Warehousing and industry. Pillar-free interiors let forklifts work inside, and sandwich panel or steel sheet walls upgrade security.
  • Hospitality and semi-permanent space. Restaurants, hotels and glamping operators use marquees as four-season extensions.

Entrance and walkway marquees

Add-on modules get far less attention than the main structure, which is a shame, because they solve the problems a single big box cannot.

  • Weather-protected arrival. Guests step out of a car under cover rather than into rain, and on a wedding day that covered transition is where a lot of the photography happens.
  • Stair and level-change coverage. You can roof a flight of stairs or a ramp, which keeps the accessible route dry and keeps you on the right side of accessibility requirements.
  • Covered links between structures. Connect a ceremony tent to a reception tent, or a building to a tent, with a covered alleyway.
  • Registration, cloakroom and bar zones. Small sectioned-off areas keep queues and clutter out of the main room.

Details that decide whether it works

  • Match the add-on eave height to the host structure, or plan a deliberate step and flash it properly
  • Use corner components to turn the walkway around site obstacles
  • Add guttering between joined roofs. Water running off one roof should not land in the walkway
  • Specify flooring through the walkway. Bare ground plus foot traffic plus rain equals mud carried into the main tent
  • Light it. A walkway with uplighting and draping reads as deliberate design rather than an afterthought
  • Confirm the anchoring plan for the add-on. Narrow modules carry less self-weight and can need ballast even when the main tent is staked

Installation, care and service life

A mid-size marquee goes up with a small crew in a few hours. Large clear spans need more people. Because the system is modular, once a crew has built one bay they have built all of them, which is why we supply an installation manual and video with every order and can send an engineer to supervise a first build.

Maintenance that genuinely extends service life:

  • Clean with pH-neutral soap and water. Never pressure-wash PVC coatings or use solvents
  • Never store a cover wet. Mildew is the single biggest killer of stored fabric
  • Inspect welds, keder tracks and connectors annually; re-torque, re-galvanise or replace as needed
  • Keep spares on hand: connector pins, keder, a patch kit and at least one spare panel
  • Re-certify fabric fire performance on the schedule your jurisdiction requires

Handled this way the frame passes 20 years and the cover approaches 8, and the whole thing can be dismantled, moved and rebuilt repeatedly. That is what makes a marquee a fixed asset rather than a consumable.

How to choose a marquee manufacturer

  • Confirm they actually manufacture. A factory controls alloy grade, profile tolerance, weld quality and fabric sourcing. A trading company can only pass on what it is given.
  • Compare profiles, not just spans. Two quotes for a “20 m marquee" can differ enormously. Ask for the profile cross-section in millimetres.
  • Verify the alloy and finish. Hard-pressed extruded 6061/T6, anodised. Ask what the cheaper alternative in the quote actually is.
  • Demand named certifications. Not “flame retardant", but the standard, the laboratory and the batch reference.
  • Ask about quality control. Documented incoming, in-process and final inspection with a stated sampling plan.
  • Check installation support. Manual, video, remote guidance, or an engineer on site.
  • Get an itemised quote. Frame, cover, walls, doors, flooring, anchoring, packing, freight terms and payment terms listed separately. Vague quotes are how surprise costs happen.

Common mistakes

  • Buying on price per square metre alone. The same number can hide very different profile sizes, fabric weights and certification.
  • Assuming “flame retardant" means “certified". It does not. Ask for the standard and the laboratory.
  • Ignoring drainage. Water has to go somewhere, and somewhere is often your dance floor.
  • Under-ballasting. The wind rating assumes the specified anchor count.
  • Forgetting the space buffer. Poles, staging and bars all eat floor area.
  • Adding sidewalls late. Enclosing a tent changes the wind loading, usually needs more anchoring, and can trigger a fire-marshal re-check.
  • Ordering to the wrong lead time. Production plus sea freight is not a two-week proposition.
